Visit Koh Lanta

The two islands, Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi, make up Koh Lanta, reachable from Krabi City on the west side of Thailand. The ride is around two hours. Koh Lanta Yai receives the most visitors. It is 27 km long and 8 km wide. It has been a national marine park since 1990, which keeps the island in relatively pristine condition.

Ban Saladan Koh Lanta

Saladan is the port town and the most populated town on the island. There’s a post office, bank, health center, opticians, food and groceries, diving companies, bakery and a market. A number of seafood restaurants offer good food at good prices, and you can take trips to Krabi, Phuket and Koh Pi Pi on the ferry.

Koh Lanta Beaches

The beaches are on the west coast, and are all worth a visit.

Khlong Dao Beach is child friendly and stretches 3 km. It’s good for running or walking. Long Beach, or Pra-Ae, is south of Khlong Dao. Long Beach and is the island’s longest beach, and one of the most beautiful in the world. Khlong Nin Beach is a quarter of an hour ride from Saladan, and is worth the trip. There are many pleasant restaurants in the area. Kantiang Bay is five minutes south you will find Kantiang Bay, a great place for dinner with excellent views.

Ban Koh Lanta

Lanta Old Town, on the south east coast, is the island’s capital, and has a Chinese feel, despite the population of the island now being 80% Muslim. Lanta Old Town has the main post office, police station, fire brigade and a hospital.

Sang Ga-U and the Sea Gypsies

The Sea Gypsies is a tribe with its own language and customs. Their village is in the south of the island and is a cultural curiosity.

Getting around Koh Lanta

Rent a car or motorbike, or a motorbike with a side wagon attached. Don’t forget to haggle!

Koh Lanta Restaurants

Koh Lanta has a good range of restaurants if you’re willing to explore the island. There are luxury place where you can get international dishes, but the most fun is to be had in experimenting with a richly diverse local cuisine.

Diving, snorkeling, elephant trekking, cooking classes, day trips, yoga, golf excursions to Krabi, cave trips, Lanta Orchid Nursery, markets – there’s plenty to keep you occupied during your stay on Koh Lanta.

Accommodation on Koh Lanta is increasing in variety. For greater range you can look further a-field to Krabi and Koh Phi Phi, but to make the most of Koh Lanta, you really need the time to explore the many west coast beaches.
