Krabi Tourist Information and Villa Rental Guide

Krabi is a province in South West Thailand with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and unbelievable good value luxury property. The capital is Krabi. Krabi is a small city with a population of around 18,000, located just upriver from the coast, and the centre of that is the memorably titled Krabi Town. Krabi City has no beaches, so visitors usually go straight to the coastal towns of Had Yao, Ao Nang or Rai Leh (Railay/Railey). Krabi villas are found throughout the area.

To get to Krabi, take a train to Suratthani and then a bus from there, or use the direct connections by road or air.

Krabi International Airport is ten kilometres from the city limits, fifteen kilometres from the city centre, forty kilometres from Ao Nang and twenty three kilometres from Had Yao. Thai Airways and Air Asia operate daily direct flights to and from Bangkok. Tiger Airways flies direct to and from Singapore nearly every day of the week and to and from Darwin, Australia on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. One-Two-Go Airlines operates daily flights to Krabi from Bangkok (DonMuang).

Buses also run from the east coast with connections to the Seatran Koh Samui ferry. State-run BKS buses are more reliable than the privately own shuttle buses who will leave you outside partner restaurants in the middle of nowhere for literally hours. Shuttle buses run between Krabi airport and Phuket airport several times a day. There are also regular buses that make the 2 hour run. Buses to and from Ao Nang charge forty baht and run every ten minutes during the day and every thirty minutes after dark.

Krabi is located on Highway 4. Regular truck taxis from Ao Nang to Krabi cost 50 baht.

Ferries run from and to Koh Phi Phi, Koh Jum and Koh Lanta every day. Most depart in the morning. Tickets can be purchased at the dock or from tourist offices and most local guesthouses and hotels. The normal passenger ferry starts from a new passenger port about three kilometres outside Krabi. Ferry tickets to Koh Phi Phi are 350 B when purchased from a travel agent. The large displayed time-tables in the many travel agencies are just for show and the times are not to be taken as being tied to the truth in the western sense.

Ao Nang Beach is Krabi's most developed beach, with palm trees, a wide range of accommodation including resorts, bungalows and guesthouses, travel services and a good variety of restaurants featuring both local and international cuisine. Railay or Railey or Raharley Beach features limestone cliffs sheltering incredible beaches, the most beautiful is Railay. The peninsula of Railay is surrounded by the Andaman Sea, lush jungle, and twisted rock Tonsai Beach has some good gyms, jagged rock faces and a convergence of hippies around the laid back beach bar, “Shun’t ‘Av Ta.” Hat Yao is the longest, and emptiest, stretch of beach on mainland Krabi.

Tiger Cave Temples a temple that serves as a religious site for the monks who live and worship there, with a maze of natural caves in an overgrown jungle valley where stone tools, pottery remains and the mold for making Buddha footprints have been excavated.

There is no official tourist market in Ao Nang but there is a lot to buy, generally, in Krabi. Many road-side stalls and shops sell t-shirts, bags and shoes. Bangkok and the north of Thailand are far cheaper and most vendors make monthly trips to the capital to pick up goods which they sell in Krabi at a profit. Krabi town is cheaper than any of the tourist spots, covering food, drinks and goods. There are two night markets in Krabi town and a vogue ‘Strike-a-Pose” department store where real items can be found at low prices ‘”Points-Mean-Prizes.”

There is a pleasant night market near the promenade next to the pier. The food is delicious and low cost, with Muslim influences. The town organizes shows on a small stage next to the market for special occasions. A larger market is based on Soi 10 in the middle of the town. Soi 10 market has lots of fresh fruit and lots of good cooked food. The market does not sell alcohol because of the religious dynamic of the town. “Viva” has Italian management and probably the best food of the various Italian restaurants on offer.
